You’re probably familiar with the ‘goldfish’ analogy when it comes to human attention spans. We all know we’ve got very little time to capture a web visitor’s interest enough to make them stay, but this stat has huge implications:
“It takes about 50 milliseconds (that’s 0.05 seconds) for users to form an opinion about your website that determines whether they like it or not[i]”
That’s as measured by three studies assessing the human visual appeal of web pages; and yes, it seems a little extreme and it’s not going to be true for every instance. But it got us thinking…
In our newly post-pandemic business world, which forced the pace of change and accelerated migration to digital information sources, what do your customers want from your website and online presences?
And is your website giving them what they want?
In terms of impact on your business, here are just five reasons to consider a website refresh (there are so many more, too!)
The right website…
Boosts your company’s credibility. 75% of customers admit to making judgements on a company’s credibility based on its website design[i]. What is yours saying about you? More to the point: what would you like it to say; how would you like visitors to ‘see’ your company; what would you like them to think of you? A great website delivers those vital first impressions.
Increases order volumes. The visit-to-order conversion rate for well-designed websites can be as much as 200% higher than for poorly designed websites[ii]. And that’s not just about how it looks; it’s about having the right content, features and functionality for your audience, and how all the elements work together to create a compelling UX (user experience).
Prompts off-line purchases too. 70% of customers research products online which they then buy offline; but after a poor site experience, 27% are less likely to buy from that supplier[iii]. That’s over a quarter of those potential sales lost, plus the potential for future purchases, when your website could – and should – be enhancing the lifetime value of all your customers.
Gives you that competitive ‘edge’. Especially if you give visitors what they want, and that includes a great mobile experience. Because, according to Google, 61% of users are unlikely to return to a site on mobile if they had trouble accessing it and 40% visit a competitor’s site instead… yours could be that site!
It’s not just about mobile though, as 88% of customers are unlikely to return to any website after a bad experience[i]; 44% actively tell their friends and family all about it[ii]… that’s one time you don’t want them talking about you!
Is one of your most powerful sales tools. Because 85% of B2B customers now search the web before making a purchase decision[iii]; and 88% of customers who search for a type of business on a mobile device call or go to that business within 24 hours[iv]… so it makes sense to keep your website up-to-date, with all the latest functionality and security, designed and optimised for all mobile device types too.
