It’s the Queen’s official 90th birthday this coming weekend; and having a milestone birthday is a great marketing opportunity… having two really is maximising the potential!

None of us are likely to be that lucky, but in terms of marketing, there are a whole load of other milestones you could use as a ‘hook’ to hang some publicity on.

Think…

  • Your 100th customer / 1000th contract / 10,000th order
  • Your biggest ever day of production
  • Your largest order
  • Your smallest order (there’s merit in even the smallest things!)
  • The most packages you’ve ever despatched in one day
  • Business expansion / new developments / new recruits

Celebrations are great good news stories; and you can have some fun with your celebratory promotional campaigns too.

Barclaycard is doing just that by ‘celebrating the Great British shopper’ for its 50th birthday. The 6 week campaign includes a great TV ad, a “What kind of shopper are you?” social media prize draw and a digital interactive quiz, “The Barclaycard Great British Shopping Showdown”, when you can vote for your most-loved shopping item. It’s a great campaign which really demonstrates the power of getting the right creative thinking, tactical mix and marketing execution for your target audience.

There’s so much you could include in your mix, but here are just a few celebratory tactics to get you started:

  • Cakes & other tasty goodies (obviously)
  • Celebratory offers & competitions
  • Commemorative give-aways (silly ones are good: making people smile will get you remembered)
  • Holding your own events / taking hospitality at other events
  • Sponsoring a local team
  • Nominating a charity & organising a series of events to support it
  • Supporting local community initiatives

It’s a powerful way of showing your customers and prospects another side to your business; adding depth and credibility and an extra dimension to your marketing too. So next time you have a milestone to celebrate, don’t just send out a quick news release and leave it at that: why not turn it into a complete campaign and make sure you realise its full potential?
