Great Social Media Boosts Your SEO But Nobody Really Understands How!
When it comes to digital marketing, SEO and Social Media are, to most clients I speak with, completely different topics. But the truth is they are very much intertwined and to be honest, if you’re serious about maximising your website traffic and digital presence… so you can be found easier, quicker and by more potential customers… you really should be spending time addressing both.
So why is there such a close relationship between the two, and how do you benefit?
Many industry experts believe that social media has a direct effect on your organic search engine rankings … so here is what they think they know:
Google loves social interaction: Retweets, likes, shares and links all help in the SEO war because Google monitors them and seems to take it all into account. We can never be 100% sure of course but experts are pretty certain this is the case.
How Twitter helps Google: If you imagine the internet as a huge library of stuff that just grows and grows, day by day, but there is no librarian in charge of how it is filed. As the library continues to expand, with no management it gets harder and harder to find what you want.
But Google is the librarian and provides the filing system which can expand to manage this virtual library. It sends out thousands and thousand of ‘crawlers’ which find information and ‘tags’ it, creating an easy to access index for users to find the information they need fast and with little effort.
Twitter helps Google with this task by discovering new content to deliver to the user in search results. And, because of this synergy, using social media in your business may help improve your SEO.
Because, according to Searchmetrics*
“Since search engines now calculate social relevance and performance across the web, this information empowers your organisation to make meaningful adjustments to its social strategies.”
And then there’s Indirect link building.
Whilst a share, like or retweet may not actually directly boost the overall ranking of your URL, it can have an indirect benefit that’s just as important, and it’s quite likely you are already doing this with your content marketing.
Blogging is one of the tools that I recommend every client should do, and here’s why!
Imagine you run a health food shop and you write a website blog once or twice a week. You also have a good following on social media and one of the blogs is shared 17 times. One of those shares is seen by a well-known fitness guru who is looking for some healthy recipes for an article she is writing, and references you as the source.
Without your blog and social media she would probably not have found your content and therefore you! And this is happening, every minute of every day, around the world, building those links which help our URL and content to be found.
Try using Social Media for referrals too:
With an active social following, who regularly share your blog posts and other content, you will attract traffic to your site.
Search engines don’t really know where the traffic is coming from but they do see your traffic is building and you are therefore supplying a good customer experience to those visitors. This in turn helps build your website credibility and of course your rankings!
In short, don’t separate Social Media and SEO; make them work hard for you… together!
Links from your social media to your website and visa versa, sharing of your blogs, sending social visitors back to your site to read a blog: these should be key elements in your SEO strategy for success. So next time someone asks whether it’s worth bothering with Social Media, you know what to say!
Until next time, remember there is no magic bullet but a little ‘socialising’ can go a long way!
